Appointment of 1st Academy of Sacred Music Organ Scholar

Academy of Sacred Music has appointed young organist, Derek Burns, as the recipient of its 1st Organ Scholarship.

This appointment marks the launch of the Academy's Organ Programme, which has the support of George McPhee MBE, Vice President of the Royal College of Organists, and Organist and Choirmaster at Paisley Abbey.

As part of the Scholarship, Derek will receive organ lessons from George McPhee, in addition to receiving lessons in harmony and choral direction.  He will also play a full role in the life of the Academy.

Currently Organist and Choir Director at St. Francis Xavier's Parish Church, Carfin, and at Carfin Lourdes Grotto (Scotland's National Shrine),  Derek is a church music enthusiast, who is self-taught on the organ and was mentored by John Pitcaithley, Director of Music at The Diocese of Motherwell.

Derek will take up his Post in September 2013.
